ACTH is a hormone produced in the pituitary gland that stimulates the release of glucocorticoids in response to stress. It is derived from POMC and acts on adrenal cortex cells through a cell membrane receptor. Its effect is limited to the secretion of cortisol and corticosterone and has little control over aldosterone.
